Tour: The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari
31/01/20 | London SE1 9RY | The Old Operating Theatre |
Time: 7:00pm. Age restrictions: All Ages. * Doors will open at 6:15 PM for a 7:00 PM start. At a local carnival in a small German Town, hypnotist Dr. Caligari presents the somnambulist Cesare, who can purportedly predict the future of curious fairgoers. But at night, the doctor wakes Cesare from his sleep to enact his evil bidding… The Cabinet of Dr Caligari makes use of the theatrical manner of stage and sets, but toys with the narrative device of flashback to tell its story. Like an old man telling us a tale, the mysterious narrator with his wide eyes, has his own backstory – and a memorable finale reveals all. The history of cinema harks back to few films that are as important and iconic as The Cabinet of Dr Caligari – the influence of this expressionist masterprice can be seen from Murnau’s Nosferatu through to The Third Man and even Batman Returns. The cinematic experience is a rare treat as the hand-painted backdrops and subtle face make-up can be seen up-close and appreciated in the way it was intended. This classic is scored by inspired live score musicians – the Cabinet of Living Cinema. This 100th year anniversary screening of The Cabinet of Dr Caligari is brought to life through the live score and the interactive playful nature as the film inspires timbre, harmony and texture. 26/10/17 | London | LSO St. Luke’s |
Time: 7:30pm. Admission: £15. Age restrictions: All Ages. The Nomad Cinema and Old Street partnership have teamed up with live score musical geniuses The Cabinet of Living Cinema, to create a chilling performance of F.W Murnau’s original Dracula film, Nosferatu. Despite this being an 80 year old masterpiece, Max Schreck’s performance in this title role is enough to still set spines a tingling and hearts racing. This classic is scored for the first time by inspired live score musicians- the Cabinet of Living Cinema. This Halloween-tide, Nosferatu is brought to life through the live score and the interactive playful nature as film inspires timbre, harmony and texture. The Cabinet of Living Cinema create live cinema events in unusual and inspiring locations. They have scored films by Svankmajer, Jodorowsky, Fritz Lang, Eisenstein and Paradjanov using loop pedals, “found object foley” and orchestral instruments. Their score to ‘Nosferatu’ offers a contemporary take on the silent film score, capturing both the nightmarish and experimental atmosphere of this legendary expressionist masterpiece. The screening takes place within the walls of the beautiful, deconsecrated Old Street Church, St Luke’s. Now the home for the London Symphony Orchestra this space is regularly filled with music from the muses. Under this architectural beacon of Old Street, with its spire that rivals the heights of the more contemporary buildings, lies a crypt of over 1000 burials Experience this unique screening over the former souls of Old Street-our very own Old Street Symphony of Horror! Time: 7:30pm. The Cabinet present Things to Come, as part of the V and A Red Carpet Late Friday events. Utopian and dystopian visions of the future (and present) thrived amongst the political narratives and upheaval of the 20s and 30s, shaped by filmmakers as diverse as Fritz Lang and Charlie Chaplin. The Cabinet of Living Cinema explore these visions and the stunningly innovative costumes, set design and special effects that made them so remarkable within a 20-minute triptych of film excerpts, presented with live scores and live foley. British sci-fi, Things to Come (1936), featured alongside Lang’s Metropolis (1927) and Chaplin’s Modern Times (1936), presciently envisions a war-ravaged world saved by “airmen” who make the next giant leap into space using a manned “space gun” (Kieron Maguire, The Cabinet of Living Cinema).
