Enchanted Cinema @ Abney Cemetery
We are delighted to launch a new collaboration with Abney Park Trust at the Delph Room, Abney Cemetery – one of London’s Magnificent Seven Cemeteries.
On July 6th, we invite all ages to go wild with The Enchanted Cinema’s interactive show – Ghibli’s Forest featuring Where the Wild Things Are (the 1973 animation) and scenes from Studio Ghibli’s breath-taking The Red Turtle (2016) OR two much-loved scenes from My Neighbour Totoro (1988) on 20th July.
We start with a warm-up climb into the forest canopy using our hands and voices before kids and grown-ups team up with instruments – turtle drums, lyre harp, zaphir chimes, gong, bird flutes, ocarinas and bamboo canes – to create a live score to the mysterious island and inhabitants that Max encounters (including your narrating of the book!), followed by stunning scenes from The Red Turtle‘s island beach and forest, again accompanied by you- our very own pop-up orchestra.
We also invite all ticket-holders to join us for our launch party on the 6th July with a special solo show by multi-instrumentalist Kieron Chissik from The Enchanted Cinema on viola, guitar, keyboard & immersive sound instruments, accompanying a visual tapestry of underwater footage and graphic illustrations. Prior to this we open the stage up for a short OPEN MIC session (replacing our house band who join us later in the residency).
3-415 – Where the Wild Things Are & The Red Turtle (Interactive Cinema Event – All Ages)
415 – try out instruments.
430 (6th July ONLY) – celebrating our launch with OPEN MIC & solo live cinema piece.
630 – end.
To keep the magic alive, we ask that everyone keeps phones in bags.
Programme supported by Film Hub London, managed by Film London. Proud to be a partner of the BFI Film Audience Network, funded by the National Lottery. www.filmlondon.org.uk/filmhub

faqS
Does every child get to do something?
If they want to – yes! Just make sure we know if you need a sound FX/ instrument by raising your hand.
My child might not want to join in.
No problem at all! Many children like to sit back and watch or join in with bits and bobs. It’s very much a team effort so they shouldn’t feel too much on the spot if they do or don’t join in.
My child has additional needs.
Our shows are very inclusive and kids with additional or SEND enjoy them a lot. Shows have several noisy parts, in case this helps.
Can my child try out instruments if they didn’t get a chance to?
Yes! At the end (and given time), we warmly invite children up to stage to try out different instruments.
Can I take photos?
Phones off and tucked away please, but please feel free take pics of your child with instruments at the end.
I don’t have / can’t borrow a child – can I still come?
Absolutely! The Enchanted Cinema is for lovers of animation, live music & live foley FX of all ages.
Is there somewhere to give feedback?
Indeed! We have a public comments book and also a google form. We value all feedback.
Watch the trailers!
